The S.O.S. Band was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1977, when they made their debut performance in a local nightclub. Musicians Jason Bryant, Billy Ellis, Willie “Sonny” Killebrew, Bruno Speight, John Alexander Simpson, James Earl Jones III, and Mary Davis caught the attention of Tabu Records and released their self-titled debut album. The single “Take Your Time (Do it Right)” immediately shot to the top of the charts and stayed there for five weeks in 1980. The album itself went gold.
Since then, the S.O.S. Band has enjoyed a steady ride of success, releasing the albums S.O.S. (1980), Too (1981), III (1982), On the Rise (1983), Just the Way You Like It (1984), Diamonds in the Raw (1989), One of Many Nights (1991) and offering fans the hit singles "High Hopes," "Just Be Good to Me" "Tell Me if You Still Care," "Just the Way You Like It" "The Finest.” Some of the S.O.S. Band’s most iconic singles have been covered by other musicians: “Just Be Good to Me,” was covered by Beats International in 1990, to great success in the U.K, and also covered by Shayne Ward. “Tell Me if You Still Care” was covered by Monica and used by Janet Jackson as a sample on one of her hits.
The S.O.S. Band has had some changes to the lineup, but still continues to record, perform, and tour with Mary Davis, Abdul Ra’oof, and Jason Bryant as members.
